Stepping House

Western suburbs, Cork

The brief for this high-spec, bespoke house on a long, narrow suburban site demanded a design approach combining contemporary Modernist design and a high level of energy-efficiency.

Given the narrowness of the site and its east-west long axis, the design concept is more urban than suburban, employing single storey development and a zen courtyard on the building's southern side to maximise solar gain.

The name "Stepping -house" derives from the stepped nature of the interior volumes and the realization of the external form of the house as a series of cubes arranged in steps.

Completed in December 2012 on budget.
